1. Thesis/Dissertation Review Process Guide

These are preliminary procedures for the thesis application. Please ensure they are completed before applying.

A. Application for Thesis/Dissertation Review and Document Submission
- Online Application: April 13 (Mon), 09:00 – April 22 (Wed), 17:00, 2026
- In-person Submission to Graduate School Office: April 15 (Wed), 09:00 – April 22 (Wed), 17:00, 2026
Strict adherence to deadlines is required. (Office Closed during Lunch: 12:00 – 13:00)
(1) Review Copies: Submit one (1) copy of the thesis/dissertation (Master’s or Doctoral) to the Graduate School Office.
(2) Distribution for Review: After verification by the office, and before the review process begins, the student must deliver three (3) copies for Master’s or five (5) copies for Doctoral to their academic advisor to proceed with the review.
(3) Language & Format: The thesis for review may be written in Korean or English. It must be prepared in the format of a completed degree thesis and must be bound.
(4) Binding Type: You may choose either a softcover or hardcover at your discretion.
B. Payment of Thesis Review Fee
Payment Period: April 13 (Mon) – April 22 (Wed), 2026
(1) Bank Account: Shinhan Bank 100-036-657940 (Account Holder: 조선대학교 대학원)
(2) Fees: Master’s: 110,000 KRW / Doctoral: 440,000 KRW
(3) The deposit must be made under the student's legal name.
(4) Refund Policy: No refunds will be issued after the review starts on May 6, 2026 (Wed).
C. Appointment of the Review Committee
Period: April 13 (Mon) – April 22 (Wed), 2026
(1) Composition: Supervised by the academic advisor; Master’s: 3 members (including Chair), Doctoral: 5 members (including Chair).
(2) Changes: No changes to the committee (including the Chair) are allowed once the review process starts on May 6, 2026 (Wed).
(3) Master’s Committee: All members must be internal faculty of Chosun University.
(4) Doctoral Committee: Must include at least one (1) external member (maximum of 2).
(5) Definitions:
Internal Member: Current faculty member of Chosun University.
External Member: Faculty member or expert not affiliated with Chosun University.
D. Thesis Review Schedule
Supervised by the Review Committee Chair and Academic Advisor (conducted by each department).
Master’s: May 6 (Wed) – June 5 (Fri), 2026
Doctoral: May 6 (Wed) – July 3 (Fri), 2026
E. Submission of Final (Passed) Thesis and Required Documents
Submit final documents to the Graduate School Office.

a) Foreign Language Examination: Must have passed the foreign language exam. b)Comprehensive Examination: Must have passed the comprehensive exam. c) Credits: Must have earned at least 36 credits. *Note: 60 credits for the Integrated Master’s/Doctoral Program. d) GPA: Must have a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. e)Thesis Guidance: Must have registered the "Thesis Proposal" results in the system and completed two semesters of Thesis Guidance. f) Ethics Course: Must have completed (or be currently enrolled in) the "Research Ethics and Thesis Writing" course. g) Research Achievement: Must have fulfilled the university’s research performance requirements. h) Registration: Must have completed 4 or more regular semesters. *8 semesters or more for the Integrated Master’s/Doctoral Program. *7 semesters or more for students with a shortened period of study. *6 semesters or more for the Combined Bachelor’s/Master’s + Integrated Doctoral Program with a shortened period. |

※ Research Achievement ① For students admitted up to the 2008 academic year: Recognition Period: Only research publications published after the date of admission (or transfer) to the Doctoral program are recognized. Requirements: Must have published research papers totaling 100% or more in research institute journals of 4-year universities or higher-level academic journals. Departmental Standards: Specific criteria for research achievements are determined by each respective department. Exception for Arts and Physical Education: Research papers may be replaced by accomplishments in creative works, performances, or exhibitions.
② For students admitted from the 2009 academic year onwards: Recognition Period: Research achievements published after the date of admission (or transfer) to the Doctoral program are recognized. Point Requirement: Must earn 60 points or more based on the Graduate School's detailed regulations on research performance. Affiliation: All research achievements must clearly state [Chosun University] as the author's affiliation. Field-Specific Requirements (Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Medical Sciences): Must have at least one (1) publication in an academic journal indexed (or candidate for indexing) in the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) or higher. |

Appointment of the Thesis/Dissertation Review Committee (Supervised by the Department Chair and Academic Advisor) |
Number of Members: Master’s: 3 members (including the Chair) / Doctoral: 5 members (including the Chair). a. Appointment: Committee members are finalized after deliberation by the Graduate School Committee. b. Advisor’s Role: The academic advisor is an ex-officio member of the committee but cannot serve as the Committee Chair. c. Internal vs. External: * Master’s: All members must be internal faculty of Chosun University. Doctoral: At least one (1) external member is mandatory (maximum of 2). d. Qualifications: Among full-time faculty, only those holding a Ph.D. may serve as doctoral dissertation reviewers. e. Specialization: A majority of the committee members must specialize in the same field as the applicant’s major. f. Interdisciplinary Programs: For interdisciplinary programs where students choose between multiple types of degrees: The majority of the committee must hold the same type of degree as the one being applied for. The Committee Chair must be appointed from among the members holding that specific degree. |

① For students admitted up to the 2008 academic year:
The recognized period for research achievements begins from the date of admission (or transfer) to the doctoral program. Applicants must have published research papers totaling 100% or more in a research institute journal of a 4-year university or a higher-level academic journal.
Specific Standards: Detailed criteria for research achievements are determined by each respective department.
Arts & Physical Education: For majors in Arts and Physical Education, research papers may be substituted with creative works, performances, or exhibition achievements.

The recognized period for research achievements begins from the date of admission (or transfer) to the doctoral program. Applicants must achieve a score of 60 points or higher based on the Detailed Regulations for Graduate School Research Achievements.
Affiliation Requirement: Research achievements must explicitly state the applicant’s affiliation as [Chosun University].
Science, Engineering, and Medical Fields: For these fields, at least one (1) research paper must be published in a journal indexed by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) (including candidate journals) or higher.

4. Mandatory Checklist
▶ Verification of Thesis Title: If there are any changes to the thesis title, you must update the title (Korean/English) via the Integrated Information System → Graduate School → Qualification Exam → Thesis (Faculty) → Summary of Evaluation Result.
※ For Ph.D. candidates: Since the thesis title is printed on the actual degree certificate, it is essential to ensure both Korean and English titles are updated and correct if any changes occur.
5. English Name on Degree Certificates
The English name on Master’s and Doctoral degree certificates will be printed exactly as registered in the "Integrated Information System." Please check your registered name in advance. (You can update your English name at any time within the system.)
6. Refund Policy
Please note that thesis evaluation fees are non-refundable starting from Wednesday, May 6, 2026, which is the official commencement date of the evaluation process.
7. Miscellaneous
Any matters not explicitly stated above shall be governed by the Graduate School's Articles of Incorporation, Academic Regulations, and relevant internal bylaws.
